Day 1: Arrival in Havana

Day 2: The highlights of the capital

The historic center of Havana has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. Together with a city historian you will take a tour through the old town and get to know the most important sights and special features of the buildings and squares.
In the afternoon there is a panoramic drive through the modern parts of the city. The Malecón with its Hotel Nacional, the Avenida de los Presidentes, Plaza Revolución, Quinta Avenida and much more are on the program.
In the evening you have the option to visit the legendary Tropicana Cabaret.

Day 3: Technical program in Havana

In a lecture today you will have a conversation with Cuban doctors and receive an overview of the processes in the health system and the classification of psychology. Then you visit a “family doctor” in his practice.
In the afternoon, on the excursion on the subject of Afro-Cuban religions, you will learn what influences the rituals and traditions of the “Santeria” have on the everyday life of Cubans.

Day 4: Technical program in Havana

Today you drive a bit out of the city and visit the Latin American medical school ELAM. Cuba developed into an important location for the training of doctors from developing and emerging countries. In addition, nurses and medical technology personnel are trained here.

Day 5: To the tobacco country

Your round trip begins and you drive to the west of Cuba to the provincial capital Pinar del Río. Here you can visit the social project “Con Amor y Esperanza” supported by avenTOURa, where young people and adults with Down Syndrome are looked after on weekdays and work together on various projects. The participants learn to draw, paint, dance and various handicrafts. Then you will visit a tobacco factory and learn a lot of interesting and fascinating things about Cuba’s most important export. In the afternoon you continue to the small town of Viñales, which you will get to know on a short tour. Dinner together in a local private restaurant. Travel time: 3 hours.

Day 6: Las Terrazas eco-commune

This morning you go on a wonderful easy hike through the scenic Viñales Valley with its famous Mogotes rocks and tobacco fields as far as the eye can see. Then you drive to Cuba’s model project “Las Terrazas. True to the principles of sustainability, tourism here should contribute to the protection of nature and the development of the community. You will also visit the former coffee finca “Buenavista”, where you will learn about the life and work of slaves.

Day 7: Via Cienfuegos to Trinidad

Continue your journey towards central Cuba. On the way you make a stop in the provincial capital Cienfuegos. The city lies in an imposing bay and offers a colonial city center and the sophisticated Punta Gorda peninsula.
About 1.5 hours further you will reach the famous colonial town of Trinidad. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its unique colonial architecture. Your guide will bring you closer to the history and sights. Travel time: 7 hours.

Day 8: Topes de Collantes climatic health resort

The Sierra del Escambray mountain range begins directly behind Trinidad. The climatic health resort Topes de Collantes is the focus of interest. Due to its special climate, respiratory diseases are still mainly treated, but programs on neurological, stress and weight problems also play a role. The spa hotel can be visited and you can then go on a hike in the diverse landscape of the nature park.

Day 9: Drive to Santa Clara

On the way from Trinidad to Santa Clara you first go through the famous valley of the sugar cane mills. Here you stop at the former estate of the Manaca Iznaca family and can also climb the Iznaga tower, which was then used to monitor the slaves on the sugar finca. A meeting with students from the local university awaits you in Santa Clara.

Day 10: Everything about Che

You will visit the city’s two revolutionary monuments this morning: the mausoleum and museum in honor of Che Guevara and the derailed train in the city center. Around noon, you will continue to the beach resort of Varadero, where you can end your trip for two days on the beach.
